Calaca – a taste of Mexico in Uplands

Vegan burrito at Calaca

It’s taken me since its launch in April to finally write about the new mexican eatery Calaca Kitchen that has opened in Uplands. I only managed a visit a few weeks ago and have since returned a further two times. It’s independent, authentic and offers a simple freshly prepared mexican menu. The decor is quirky and the service efficient and friendly.

Tortillas to start

Starters are £3.50 and main courses £8.50 so it’s fantastic value. And you can select how spicy you want your meal – hot hot hot for me. Water is automatically brought to your table with a choice of original mexican beers, tequila and margaritas.

Hot spicy sauces

I opted for tortillas (freshly fried mmmmmm), salsa & guacamole to start. My partner salivated over corn on the cob with feta, coriander & lime. I had the vegan burritos with pinto beans, vegan cheese, lime rice, crisp lettuce & vegan sour cream for my main. Whilst he had a chicken version of the above (he’s not very plant based).

There are some splendid desserts on offer – including a vegan option (caramalised apple burrito – get in there!). We were too full up though.

Calaca menu

Beautiful authentic tasty food. The fact I have been back twice is testament to how good it is. And I shall no doubt be returning soon. Please go – we need to support our local restaurants.

Calaca Kitchen is at 75 Uplands Crescent, Uplands, Swansea SA2 0EX
