I’m a bit of a margarita snob. I’m blessed with a partner who’s a chemistry graduate and a master of molecular mixology. Cocktail recipes are obsessively adhered to – unlike me who slops just a ‘bit of this’ and ‘bit of that’ in (usually with a side order of a devastating hangover).
A margarita consists of tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice often served with salt on the rim of the glass. And it’s my favourite cocktail by a mile. Yet not many bars can recreate a decent one. So far a roof top bar in Venice has yet to be beaten but unfortunately it’s logistically difficult to make repeated return visits. A taxi to Wind Street is a financial stretch these days.
Even some of the swanky-glitzy bars fall short on assembling the ecstatic experience of a bloody good margarita. So it’s quite odd that the best margarita in Swansea is served up by a chain restaurant in Swansea’s city centre. Las Iguanas wins hands down in the margarita war. It’s the closest to perfection that I have discovered locally. They put effort, care and decent ingredients into their cocktails (thank you for using fresh lime juice). If you are lucky enough to have the very cool and talented Jamie serving you, you’re guaranteed a handsome cocktail.
Oh and it’s always happy hour so cocktails are 2 for 1 – that’s £10.95 for two dazzling margaritas – although money is no object for a taste of the promised land. The food’s pretty good too – although don’t forget eatin’s cheatin!
Las Iguanas is in Castle Street, Swansea.
